Quantum physics may be coming to the rescue of global warming. A long hypothesized particle which could help cool the earth has finally been discovered. With the sexy name of Criegee Biradicals, these particles - powerful oxidisers of pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide - accelerate the formation of sulphate and nitrate in the atmosphere. Those compounds lead to aerosol formation , cloud creation, rain and, ultimately, a planetary cooling effect. And nature herself may be lending a hand. A significant ingredient required for the production of these biradicals comes from chemicals released naturally by plants.
